Cold Huckleberry Soft Serve
Summer Perfected
In some ways, love of a good soft serve ice cream is the opposite of being a gourmet, but if that’s the case, I’m guilty. This is the perfect soft serve. Firm, yet collapsing on your lips when you take that first bite. Just big enough so that you feel like you got your money’s worth. Not too sweet, not too tart.
We discovered this cone by accident when we drove to the nearest grocery to buy some ice cream, only to discover that the store had just closed for the evening. Right next door was the Ram Drive In, with a big sign that said, “Life is Short, Eat Ice Cream”. We took it as a sign, and have not looked back. They only carry the huckleberry for part of the year. It is, simply, the perfect summer treat. It takes a lot of will power to not go get one every day (or even several times a day).
This Haiku, by the way, was composed on a napkin in a pub while waiting for our dinner. Only later did we learn that the traditional Haiku form is 5, 7, 5, not 5, 7, 3. But thankfully, we had a lot to work with.
Miles Away Farm Blog © 2010, where we’re miles away from a franchised ice cream parlor and licking our cones as fast as we can, before they drip on our shirts.
